It has long been known that dark chocolate is linked to health benefits like lowering blood pressure and reducing the risk of stroke. Chocolate is high in antioxidants, which is the key ingredient to its health benefits. Well hold on to your hats, because this delicious snack just got even better. Barry Callebaut says it may have come up with a chocolate bar that could fight wrinkles and slow the aging process.
The Swiss company is telling all of us aging, sweet toothed women that we should - no - we need to eat chocolate every day to look younger; 20 grams of it to be specific. This special chocolate is still packed with the natural health supplements of antioxidants, while also adding a special technique to the chocolate-making process that preserves flavanols found in cocoa beans.
These added flavanols, along with the antioxidants, help prevent wrinkles and make skin more radiant by boosting elasticity and improving hydration.
Green living and natural health efforts to make chocolate better for you have been in the works for years. The functional chocolate market, which includes organic and diet chocolate, is seeing double-digit market growth, outpacing the rest of the chocolate market by 1-2%.
Some people are skeptical of the reports and studies done by Barry Callebaut. Richard Hurrell, a professor of human nutrition at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology said "There is quite a lot of evidence that cocoa flavanols have a positive effect on the blood flow. They could reduce blood pressure which could have a positive effect on cardiovascular diseases." He continued that "the possible effects on skin and cognitive performance are less well established. There is evidence, but it is much less consistent. It may be that the effect on the blood flow is also what improves memory or skin health in some of the studies."
